February is free-admission month at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. Come and enjoy our exciting new exhibits and animals: from the history and changing shape of the Cape to our spectacular Aquarium. Meet your Cape neighbors of sea, marsh and pond: blue lobsters, lined seahorses, baby horseshoe crabs, diamondback terrapins; and fish and turtles of all sizes and habitats.

Learn about the natural world around us through our ever-popular interactive nature programs, free to the public during the February school vacation week! Maybe it's time for you to become a member and make every month a free-admission adventure!

What Does It Mean?

When asked to define the purpose of the Cape Cod Center for Sustainability, it's tempting to answer simply that it is "to sustain Cape Cod." But I know this response doesn't shed much light because sustainability is a term that does not yet have a commonly understood definition.

In part to address this semantic problem, we've undertaken several projects over the years in an effort to reach some sort of consensus about the measures that define the Cape's quality of life. A Christmas Gift!

Do you have days that end completely differently than you anticipated? Well, we're sitting here at the end of the week in something of a daze. It's amazing how quickly things can change.

Last weekend I asked all the girls what they would like for Christmas. For 17 years, My Daughter has said, "A chocolate bar." Never anything else. Getting an idea for a gift out of her was always met with, "Mom, I just want a chocolate bar." So I had resigned myself to barely even asking anymore because I just knew that I would be getting her a chocolate bar.

This time she surprised me with a different answer: "I would like a cell phone and an iPod!"

Call To Action ...

There are a variety of motivations, other than altruism, that encourage people to volunteer.

For example, young people of high school age see merit in the learning experiences gained by volunteering. For others, who are no longer in school, volunteering is a way to assume civic responsibilities and establish networks of people interested in common goals and ambitions. These relationships that where forged when volunteering often become enduring social and business friendships.
