Cape Cod Chapter NRHS


The Cape Cod Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society welcomes new members and volunteers are always needed. We hold many events throughout the year at the West Barnstable Train Station, including taking part in the West Barnstable Village Festival in mid August, the Cranberry Express train rides in October and the North Pole Express in early December each year. Help at the West Barnstable Train stations on Saturdays for mowing, repair work, selling train ticket in the office and helping with tours of the historical train station are always needed! The historical train museum is open May through October. See our web site for more details and we hope to see you at the West Barnstable Train Station!

Imagine the look on a child's face when they are introduced to sea star or baby lobster! The volunteers at our touch tank get to experience that excitement all summer long!

Spend 3 hours once a week and change a guest's experience for a lifetime.

Boat Shop

Cape Cod Maritime Museum


The latest addition to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum is our Boat Shop, located on the lower level of the Museum. The Boat Shop hosts boat building and model ships courses, and historic vessel restoration. The Museum seeks volunteers interested in teaching and building in our Boat Shop, and acting as docent shipwrights, or participating as carpenters for boat building and other boat shop projects.

Your assistance in the canteen area will help us to assure that our last contact with the donor is a positive one. Your personal touch of kindness will make our focus on service excellence come alive!

You will be monitoring donors, as well as serving them snacks and beverages.

CapeAbilities


A wide variety of positions have been designed to match a volunteer's interests to individuals served by capeAbilities. Volunteers have become "Special Buddies", sharing activities with individuals with disabilities. They have landscaped yards and organized yard sales. Volunteers have participated in art classes and art shows, and are welcome to supply professional services (photography, entertainment, graphic design) as well as their personal time and friendship.

Volunteer opportunities can range from regular weekly appointments to one-time special events. Below are some suggestions for volunteer roles.

Education Volunteer

National Marine Life Center


Assist the National Marine Life Center by teaching about marine life and ocean conservation to school groups, after school programs, community organizations, and at fairs and festivals. No experience necessary - we will train you. Just bring a love of the ocean and a willingness to share information with others. Minimum age - 14 years. Feeding The Homeless

New Road


The third Thursday of every month from 5pm-7pm, we cook and serve food to the clients at NOAH shelter in Hyannis. We can always use an extra pair of hands, and would love for you to join us. The only skills you need are a smile and a willingness to serve!



Field Guides Needed

Cape Cod Museum of Natural History


The 2007 Field Guide Training program for naturalists at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will be a seven-session course on Thursdays, beginning March 22 and ending May 3. The morning sessions beginning at 9:00 am will concentrate on information about the natural world and techniques for being a successful field guide. There will be special speakers or field walks in the afternoons, ending no later than 3 pm.

This year, with the museum's emphasis on the Rachel Carson centennial and so many new exhibits, there will be additional topics covered. Being a field guide is a great opportunity to share your love of nature and continue the learning that never ends.

Mentor

WE CAN


WE CAN Corp., the safety net for Cape women, announces Mentor openings in its "Pathmakers" program, our innovative mentorship program for women in transition. The program includes monthly skillbuilding workshops as well as individual mentoring. Women are provided support as they create goals for the year. They are carefully paired with mentors who can best assist them in attaining their goals. The workshops round out the program, offering an opportunity for our clients to learn new skills while forming a support network with other Pathmakers (mentees) and mentors. Topics covered in monthly meetings include self-esteem/empowerment, stress management, assertiveness training and conflict resolution, and if needed, financial and other "survival skill" training.We always are looking for mentors. We maintain a pool of long- and short-term mentors so that the right mentor is paired with a Pathmaker. Interested women should contact WE CAN at 508.430.8111. Pals program volunteer

Brain Injury Assoc. of MA


Be a pal! The Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts (BIA-MA) is looking for volunteers on Cape Cod for the Pals program, which matches brain injury survivors aged 16 and older with peer-aged volunteers in their community for activities inside and outside their home.

Volunteers benefit greatly from the experience. You'll make new friends and enhance the lives of people who have so much to give. The Pals program works within your schedule and availability. Each volunteer will undergo a CORI record check (Criminal Offender Record Information) before joining our program. No experience necessary: volunteers will be trained on aspects of brain injury.

The commitment to the Pals program for the volunteer is a weekly phone call or email and a monthly get-together, either a group function or one on one. BIA-MA will assist the volunteers in organizing and planning activities and volunteers will be reimbursed by BIA-MA for travel and activity expenses.

Ocean-lovers wanted! People of all skill sets are needed to help save marine animals and educate children and the general public about ocean conservation. Specifically, we need volunteers to help with education, events, fundraising, administration, facilities, and animal care. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old to work in education, events, fundraising, and administration. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have animal care experience to work in animal care (resume and interview required).
